Somatin

SOMATIN® (Somatropin) is a 191 amino acid protein with molecular weight of 22‚000 Daltons.SOMATIN® is a recombinant polypeptide of human growth hormone SOMATIN® is supplied as a sterile solution for subcutaneous injection in ready-to-administer prefilled pens contain 5 and 10 milligram Somatropin with a volume of 1.5 mL.

Indications

In children who suffer from:

  • Growth hormone deficiency
  • Noonan syndrome
  • Turner syndrome
  • SGA at birth who fail to catch-up by 2-4 years of age
  • Chronic renal insufficiency
  • Idiopathic short stature
  • SHOX deficiency

In adults who suffer from:

  • Growth hormone deficiency
  • Short-bowel syndrome

Administration Instructions

  • First, remove the pen from the refrigerator and allow it to be at the same
  • temperature as the environment for 30 minutes. This will reduce the pain during injection.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Disinfect the body of the pen well with an alcohol pad.
  • Remove the cap of the pen.
  • Disinfect the needle joint with an alcohol pad.
  • Take a new needle tip from the Somatin box and remove its paper label.
  • Remember to always use a new needle tip for each injection. This reduces the possibility of infection, drug leakage and clogging of the needle head.
  • Never use a bent or damaged needle.
  • Never press the injection button before installing the needle.
  • Place the needle directly on the pen and twist it clockwise until it is completely secured.
  • Remove the outer cap of the needle head.
  • And then remove the inner cap of the needle head and throw it away.
  • If after removing the inner cap, a drop of medicine comes out of the needle, it is normal and it means that your pen is ready to determine the dose and injection and you don’t need to do the rest of the preparation steps of the pen.
  • If a drop of medicine does not come out of the needle immediately after its installation, turn the dose adjustment screw clockwise until the number 2 is displayed in front of the dose indicator. Hold the pen upwards and gently tap the container containing the medicine so that if there are any air bubbles in the medicine, they will move upwards. Do not worry if small bubbles remain in the medicine compartment.
  • Press the injection button with your thumb until the number zero appears in front of the dose indicator. With this, a drop of medicine will be removed from the needle and the pen will be ready for injection.
  • If no drops appear, you can repeat the mentioned steps up to four times.
  • If a drop does not appear, change the needle and repeat the steps again, and if a drop does not appear again, do not use the pen and contact the AriaTinagen Patient Support Center.
  • Note that for each new pen, the process of checking the drop out of the needle must be done. And it is enough to perform these steps once for each pen and it is not necessary to repeat these steps for each injection.

Side effects

Common side effects of this drug include injection site reactions, edema, headache, hypothyroidism, nausea and vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, joint pain, muscle pain, ear and respiratory infection, etc. In case of other symptoms that you think may be caused by taking the drug, inform your pharmacist or doctor.

Storage

  • Be sure to keep the Somatin pen in its box.
  • Protect from light and out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid shaking the pen.
  • Check that the Somatin in your pen is transparent and colorless. To reach this goal, turn the pen upside down once or twice. If Somatin is cloudy, do not use that pen and contact the Aria Tinagen Patient Support Unit.
  • Store a new, unused Somatin pen in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
  • Keep the rest of Somatin in the refrigerator at a temperature between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius and use it within 4 weeks. You can also keep the rest of Somatin at room temperature up to 25 degrees Celsius and use it within 3 weeks.
  • Do not use Somatin that has been frozen or stored at a temperature higher than 25 degrees Celsius.

Questions

1) What should be done if the injection is not done successfully?

– If the injection is not successful, contact the doctor and pharmacist or the Aryatinagen Patient Support Center as soon as possible.

2) What should be done if the injection of one or several doses of Somatin is forgotten?

– Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

3) What should be done if a higher dose than the doctor’s order is injected by mistake?

– If you inject more than the dose prescribed by the doctor, call your doctor immediately.

4) How to carry Somatin with you if you are going to travel?

– Put the pen in the refrigerated medication travel bag and put dry ice next to it.
